Delivery rider on an electric cargo bike in a Dutch residential street

A step-by-step guide for business owners

Starting delivery from your restaurant or shop

Delivery brings in extra revenue, but only when it adds up: an area you can actually serve, a menu that survives the ride and margins that still leave something after commission. Here is how to go about it.

From collection to delivery in six steps

  1. 1

    Set your delivery area

Start small. Pick the postcodes you can reach within fifteen minutes, even on a busy Friday evening. A customer who waits too long does not order again. You can always expand later.

  2. 2

Choose: your own couriers or hired ones

With your own couriers you pay less commission, but staff, vehicles and insurance are up to you. When you book a courier per order, you pay more per order and nothing when it is quiet. Many businesses combine both: deliver themselves and add couriers on busy evenings.

  3. 3

    Work out your margins

Add up the commission, the administration fee and your packaging per order. Then set your delivery fee and minimum order so a small order on a long ride does not cost you money.

  4. 4

    Make your menu delivery-ready

Not every dish travels well. Choose what still tastes good after twenty minutes, use packaging that keeps food warm and dry, and list the allergens for every dish. You are required to provide that information when you sell online too.

  5. 5

    Set up your ordering channels

Make sure customers can order from you in several places: a platform for new customers, your own ordering site for regulars and the phone for those who prefer to call. Everything should arrive in one place, or you will miss orders.

  6. 6

    Let your neighbourhood know

Put a QR code on your receipt and a flyer in every bag, add an order link to your Google Business Profile and tell your regular customers. The first weeks decide whether it takes off.

Frequently asked questions about delivery

Can I start with collection only?

Yes. Many businesses start with collection and switch on delivery once it is running. You set the hours for delivery and collection separately.

How big should my delivery area be?

As big as you can actually serve. A rule of thumb is a driving time of at most fifteen minutes. You set the area per postcode, each with its own delivery fee and minimum order.

Where do Hebtrek couriers operate?

The delivery service is available in the regions where we have couriers. You will see whether that includes you when you sign up, or ask us by phone or WhatsApp.

Can I stop the delivery service again?

Yes, the delivery service can be stopped monthly. You keep receiving orders for collection or your own delivery.
